Billed as a trivial play for serious people, Lancing Repertory Players production of Oscar Wilde’s most renowned comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest”, is bound to please audiences from Lancing, Worthing and beyond. This story of two bachelors, John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, was written be Wilde in 1894 whilst he stayed in The Haven, on the Esplanade in Worthing. During that time the play had the working title of “Lady Lancing”.

John and Algernon both create alter egos named Ernest to escape their own tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure.

Lancing Repertory Players seem to have timed their production perfectly. In 2019 Oscar Wilde himself has come back to visit Worthing in the shape of a mural that has recently appeared on the outside wall of the Corner House pub in Worthing.
