The Broadwater Midsummer Oak
June 23 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
The Midsummer Oak, at the top end of Broadwater Green is the site of an ancient story. Legend has it, that at midnight on Midsummer’s eve, skeletons will rise from the roots of the tree and dance around it until sunrise. The story is a strange one, and even more unusual is the fact that the story almost certainly saved the tree, when in 2006, it was set for removal by the Highways Authority as it posed a risk to passing traffic.
Artist David Parker has been commissioned by Adur and Worthing Trust to explore the story of the tree and what it means to people. David will be retracing the story through encounters with local people, historians, writers and musicians.
The work will result in an audio-visual re-telling of the story which will be presented as a short-animated film, and audio podcast.
There will be a drop-in celebration and launch event at the Midsummer Oak on Midsummer’s Eve, Sunday June 23rd between 10am and 12 midday, where people can listen to the story and contemplate the ancient tree for themselves.
