Shaping the Future: Shoreham Wordfest 2019

September 27 @ 7:30 pm - October 13 @ 10:00 pm

£10 – £15

Shoreham-by-Sea’s annual literary festival – a celebration of words and ideas.

This year’s theme explores what lies ahead, and how we can help to shape it.

Highlights include John Humphrys launching his new book in one of his first appearances after leaving BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, our new Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage with his poetry collection, ‘Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic’ and Sussex resident Lynne Truss with her latest comic mystery novel, ‘The Man that Got Away’ set in Brighton. Simon Brett will entertain with his one-man play ‘Entries and Exits’, and Shoreham Beach resident, actress and playwright Janet Behan, brings a premiere production of her trilogy ‘Why Shouldn’t I Go?’

Alexandra Harris explores how the English weather has inspired poets and novelists in ‘Weatherland’. Stanley Johnson outlines efforts to protect our countryside and charismatic TV presenter, Peter Owen-Jones introduces a Climate Emergency Summit, followed by a Climate Change workshop for young people.

Polly Toynbee will discuss the current and future prospects for Britain’s politics with Isabel Hardman and Paul Johnson. TV science presenter Dallas Campbell marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and explores the future potential of space travel in his interactive show: ‘We Choose to Go to the Moon.’ This special event will be at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing as the first partnership between Shoreham Wordfest and Worthing Theatres.

There are 37 events in total, including walks and tours. Children and family activities include a woodland puppet show at Sussex Wildlife Trust, Molly and Munch the Dinosaur at Lancing and Fishersgate, and a beautiful production of Michael Morpurgo’s I Believe in Unicorns.

Wordfest launches at Sussex Yacht Club on Friday 27 September and close with a Wrap party at Ropetackle Arts Centre on Sunday 13 October.

There is a series of Creative Writing workshops and open mic opportunities as a Wordfest Warm up throughout September, including an oral story-telling evening on the Verda Houseboat.
