FOTGW: Britain on film: COAST & SEA with The Worthing Society
February 3 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm£5.50
Let’s go to the seaside! Travel round our gorgeous, varied coast, filmed throughout the 20th century from 1901 to 1978
Join The Worthing Society for a special screening of the ICO’s Britain on Film: Coast & Sea.
Ahead of the screening The Worthing Society will introduce their group and a talk about the historical significance of oft overlooked parts of the town.
This will be followed by the 3 minute film Creative Waves – A Visual History of Worthing’s Promenade. A short film bringing together research from Creative Wave’s heritage project “Pop Up on the Prom”. The project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund focuses on and celebrates the last 200 years of Worthing’s promenade, researching the social history and the seafront developments through photographic archives and editorials.
We will then screen Britain on Film: Coast and Sea which takes audiences around our gorgeous, varied coast in films from 1901 to 1978. Within this nostalgic collection are several forays on the promenade at classic British holiday resorts including Weston-super-Mare, Morecambe and Skegness, a visit to Butlin’s in Brighton and 1930s surfing in Newquay. Learn about lifeboats via the RNLI’s brisk, engaging promo; the private life of seabirds in Julian Huxley’s pioneering, Oscar-winning short film, and explore the world of shipbuilding with the construction of the SS Olympic. A particular highlight is Claude Friese-Greene’s lush travelogue around the South West in wonderfully re-coloured footage from the 1920s.
Britain on Film on Tour collects six thematic programmes that make up a unique picture of the United Kingdom, both people and place, and will tour venues across the country. This latest programme will give audiences unprecedented access to the UK’s cinematic coastal history on film, featuring work never-before-seen since first release.
