Another chance to visit Worthing, a Seaside Resort
April 4 @ 10:45 am - 12:30 pmFree
Saturday April 4th is a date for your diary as it is the first Broadwater and Worthing Cemetery tour of the season, when the cemetery will be in its spring finery. We have a varied and interesting series of tours planned, commencing with a chance to revisit
Worthing, a Seaside Resort.
Following princess Amelia’s visit to Worthing in 1798 and the new turnpike road providing a direct route from London in 1804 Worthing became a popular place to visit and stay. Many new lodging houses and hotels were built, along with restaurants and places of entertainment. The most popular attraction of all was the sea, some would partake of the sea bathing, watch the pony and donkey races on the beach, take a trip in a pleasure boat or just stroll along the prom, taking in the sea air.
The tours commence at 11.00 on the first Saturday of the month, and will follow an easy route. Please meet at the chapels at 10.45 in order to peruse the photo information boards, maybe purchase a tour guide for the small sum of £1.00, and for a donation partake of a hot or cold drink and a delicious slice of homemade cake.
In order to maintain the graves and the cemetery a lot of work is required. On the last Saturday of each month the Friends meet at the chapels at 10.00 to undertake two hours of general clearance and grave maintenance. All tools and equipment are provided, so why not come and join us where not only will you be heartily welcomed, but you can benefit from a healthy workout!
