Andreas Tophøj and Rune Barslund / The Sussex Knucker Band
March 13 @ 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm£14 – £17
Danish duo Andreas Tophøj and Rune Barslund are masters of the violin, accordion and viola. The accomplished duo has its roots in Jutland, Denmark, and emerged from the folk scene formed around the Academy of Music in Odense, which until recently was named after composer and musician Carl Nielsen.
Like the famous composer, Tophøj and Barslund’s sound is closely linked to the Danish folk tradition, but with a new interpretation, their inspiration gained from residing in Ireland and the US and from encounters with Celtic and Nordic musical cultures. Their repertoire is based on a compelling musical melting pot and featuring mostly original compositions. The two musicians are also known from other bands such as ZAR, Kasír and Basco and will be releasing their new album in 2020.
The Sussex Knucker Band was born in September 2016 after being brought together for a one-off scratch ceilidh. It was pretty evident from the moment they struck their final chord on that eventful night something special had been born. Shortly afterwards, rehearsals began and the whirlwind of intrigue and gigs began to manifest.
The Sussex Knucker Band have in their midst the unforgettable Bryony (MC extraordinaire caller and whistle player), Harriet and Ashley (duelling fiddlers), Squeezy Phil (accordion), Max (whirling gurdy master) and Tom on the groovy guitar. This eclectic mix of instruments and generally daft bunch make for one funky folky Frenchy rocky groovy sound that will get you dancing from the ceilings.
They play anything from typical English folk – but not as you’ve heard it before – to music from Scotland, Ireland and France – all with that special Knucker twist.
